Types of bets
There are several different bets available for basketball. Each of these bets offers a different risk-reward balance, and some are more appropriate for certain gamblers than others. The three main types of bets are:
- Point Spreads: The most common type of bet in American sports, a spread bet is when you bet on a team to win by a certain margin. The “spread” is the number of points by which you believe the favored team will win. For example, let’s say you bet $100 that the Miami Heat will win their next game by more than five points, with a spread of +7. If Miami wins by eight points or more, you win the bet. You would get your $100 back, plus an extra $100 (your profit). If Miami wins by six points or less, however, you lose the bet.
- Over/Under: An over/under bet is when you place a bet on whether the total points scored in a game will be above or below a certain number. If you think a team will score less than their average points, you will place an “under” bet. If you think a team will score more than their average points, you will place an “over” bet.
- Moneyline: A Moneyline bet is where you bet on one team to win the game outright, with no consideration of the margin of victory. For example, let’s say that you bet on the Houston Rockets to win their game against the Golden State Warriors. If they win, they will win the game by the average amount, but you will win the bet regardless of the margin of victory. If the Rockets win by two points or less, you will win the bet. If they win by more than two points, you will lose the bet.
a. Point Spreads
When placing a spread bet, you’re predicting the final score of the game as well as which team will win. If you bet on the Miami Heat to win their next game by more than five points, you would be predicting that Miami would win their game by eight points or more. This is an appropriate bet if you feel like Miami is likely to win or if the opposing team is significantly weaker. If you think that the teams’ strengths are similar, you could try betting on the “push,” which is wagering that the final score will end in a tie. This is often a safe and reliable bet. Unlike over/under bets, point spreads can be tailored to your strengths and weaknesses. If you’re a strong defensive player, you could try betting on a team with a strong defense, such as the Boston Celtics. If you’re a strong offensive player, you could try betting on a team with a strong offense, such as the Houston Rockets. If you’re a balanced player, you could try betting on a team with a balanced team, such as the Toronto Raptors.
b. Over/Under
An over/under bet is when you wager whether the total points scored in a game will be above or below a certain number. This type of bet is especially useful if you think the skill levels of the two teams are similar. If you think that the teams’ strengths are roughly the same, you could try betting on the “push,” which is wagering that the total points scored will be tied. Let’s say that you think a game between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat will be very close. In this case, you could try betting on the total points scored to be around 225. If you think a game will be relatively high-scoring, you could try betting on the total points scored to be around 250. If you think a game will be low-scoring, on the other hand, you could try betting on the total points scored to be around 200.
c. Moneyline
A money line bet is where you bet on one team to win the game outright, with no consideration of the margin of victory. For example, let’s say that you think the Miami Heat will win their next game against the Boston Celtics. If they win, they will win the game by the average amount, but you will win the bet regardless of the margin of victory. This is an appropriate bet if you think one team is significantly stronger than the other. It is also appropriate if you have no prediction as to who will win the game. For example, let’s say that you think the Miami Heat will win their next game against the Boston Celtics, but you have no prediction as to the margin of victory. In this case, you could try betting on the Miami Heat to win their next game by the normal amount ($100 on the Heat to win $100).
